World's Largest Carbon-free Hydrogen Project

We are proud to help make the dream of carbon-free energy a reality. Air Products, together with ACWA Power and NEOM, has signed an agreement for a $5 billion world-scale carbon-free hydrogen-based ammonia production facility powered by renewable energy. Sited in NEOM, a new model for sustainable living located in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the project will supply 650 tons per day of carbon-free hydrogen for transportation globally and save the world three million tons per year of CO₂.

The joint venture project, scheduled to be onstream in 2025, is based on proven, world-class technology and will include the innovative integration of over four gigawatts of renewable power from solar, wind and storage; production of 650 tons per day of hydrogen by electrolysis using thyssenkrupp technology through our exclusive strategic cooperation agreement; production of nitrogen by air separation using Air Products technology; and production of 1.2 million tons per year of carbon-free ammonia using Haldor Topsoe technology through our global alliance agreement.

Air Products will be the exclusive off-taker of the carbon-free ammonia, which we intend to transport around the world to be dissociated to produce carbon-free hydrogen for the transportation market. We are committed to providing carbon-free hydrogen through various sources around the world to improve air quality and sustainability.

Saudi Arabia's First Hydrogen Fueling Station

Saudi Aramco and Air Products have jointly built the first hydrogen fueling station in Saudi Arabia, marking the first step in developing oil-based hydrogen transport within the Kingdom. The fueling station combines Saudi Aramco's industrial and technological experience with our hydrogen fueling know-how and experience.

Located at Air Products' Technology Center in the Dhahran Techno Valley Science Park, the new station incorporates our proprietary SmartFuel® hydrogen fueling technology to supply an initial fleet of six Toyota Mirai fuel cell electric vehicles with high-purity compressed hydrogen. The data collected during the pilot phase of this project will provide valuable information for the assessment of future applications of this emerging and diverse transport technology in the local environment.

Our new 10,000 gallon liquid hydrogen trailers, used in energy and other industrial markets, have been designed for the safe unloading of liquid hydrogen, particularly at fueling stations located in densely populated areas. With novel dispensing connections to fill and withdraw liquid hydrogen, the new SmartFuel® trailers enable unloading with almost no venting, meeting all regulatory requirements.

Built within a 30-foot ISO container that meets UN portable tank specifications, the new trailers are designed for the energy market to accommodate permitting to meet safety distance requirements. The new SmartFuel® trailers also meet ASME Section X11 standards and have third-party ABS and DOT-SP approvals.

Based on our extensive hydrogen experience and contributions to the evolution of fuel cell technology, Air Products designed the Smartfuel® portable hydrogen fueler to provide hydrogen fueling whenever and wherever it is needed. Complete with fueling storage and dispensing, our portable hydrogen fueler can be transported from location to location to ensure daily, around-the-clock hydrogen vehicle fueling availability. With wireless telemetry, we can remotely monitor the fuel level and refill the portable hydrogen fueler in place or exchange it for a full unit when the hydrogen storage quantity is low. There are currently 17 Air Products portable hydrogen fuelers operating in the U.S. and worldwide today.
